Getting help

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Thank you for pointing it out. I've tagged it for deletion as well. The "ESA Standard License" is not acceptable on Commons because it does not permit commercial reuse. — Huntster (t @ c) 17:30, 25 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Word of mouth is not acceptable for a license on Commons. There must be some evidence, either through publication or by that user submitting consent through Commons' Volunteer Response Team ticket system. If you are referring to photos like File:Launch of Falcon 9 carrying DSCOVR (16511407248).jpg, then no. An author can change the license of their original image going forward, but they generally cannot revoke or alter a license that has already been granted to someone who reused the image while it was available under that license. Conversely, Commons may continue hosting an image that was validly uploaded under a free license even if the original author later changes the license. However, that does not mean Commons can upload an older version of an image from the original source simply because it used to be freely licensed.

However, if a third party reused the image while it was still available under a free license, and that reuse was itself validly published under the original free license, Commons may be able to upload that reused copy instead. There's plenty of nuance, though, because copyright laws are terribly complex and convoluted.

First, this page is for discussing issues with that particular category, not for discussing image name changes. Second, the requested changes violate Commons:File renaming. I also uploaded almost all the images by Giovanni Barbarino except the old ones. You can find them at Category:Astronomical images by Giovanni Barbarino.
