Life and firearms
Wilhelm Mauser was born in Oberndorf am Neckar in 1834. His father, Franz Andreas Mauser, was a master gunsmith at the Royal Württemberg gun factory. Wilhelm entered the factory at age 14 and learned firearms production before beginning his long partnership with his younger brother Paul.
During the 1860s, the brothers worked on breech-loading firearm mechanisms. They entered a business arrangement with American agent Samuel Norris and spent time in Liège, Belgium. A United States patent granted in 1868 named Norris, Wilhelm Mauser, and Paul Mauser as the inventors of improvements to breech-loading firearms.
After returning to Oberndorf, Paul built and refined prototypes while Wilhelm represented their work during Prussian rifle trials at Spandau. Their single-shot bolt-action rifle was adopted as the German Model 1871. The order established the Mauser name in military rifle design.
The brothers registered their Mauser partnership in 1872 and formed Gebr. Mauser & Cie. after buying the Royal Württemberg gun factory in 1874. Wilhelm handled much of the firm’s business, travel, and contract work while Paul led technical development. Wilhelm secured an important Serbian rifle order in 1881 and died in Oberndorf the next year. Paul then continued the company and its rifle-development program.
